The Government of the People’s Republic of China has reiterated its unwavering support for the Federal Republic of Nigeria, cautioning against any form of foreign interference in the country’s internal affairs. This declaration comes in response to recent remarks by U.S. President Donald Trump, who threatened military action over alleged religious persecution in Nigeria.
Speaking at a press briefing in Beijing on Tuesday, Mao Ning, spokesperson for China’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, emphasized that Nigeria has the sovereign right to determine its development path in accordance with its national realities. She described Nigeria as a “comprehensive strategic partner” and stressed that China firmly opposes any attempt by foreign powers to use religion or human rights as a pretext to meddle in the domestic affairs of sovereign nations.
“As Nigeria’s strategic partner, China opposes any attempt by foreign powers to use religion or human rights as a pretext to meddle in another country’s internal affairs or impose sanctions and military threats,” Mao stated.
The Chinese government commended the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for its efforts in maintaining national stability and promoting development. It also called on the international community to respect Nigeria’s sovereignty and refrain from actions that could destabilize the region.
This diplomatic stance underscores the deepening ties between China and Nigeria, particularly in areas of infrastructure development, trade, and multilateral cooperation. Both nations have consistently emphasized mutual respect and non-interference as the foundation of their bilateral relationship.
