In a significant escalation of security cooperation, the United States has deployed an undisclosed number of surveillance drones and approximately 200 military personnel to Nigeria to provide advanced intelligence support in the fight against insurgency and banditry, according to official reports.

The deployment, confirmed by sources within the defense establishment, aims to bolster the Nigerian military’s operational capabilities by providing real-time aerial surveillance, signals intelligence, and reconnaissance data. The contingent of U.S. troops, consisting primarily of intelligence analysts, support personnel, and drone operators, will be stationed at a secured airbase in northern Nigeria, operating under the auspices of a bilateral security agreement.

“This deployment is focused on intelligence-sharing and technical support to assist our Nigerian partners in degrading the capacity of extremist organizations and violent non-state actors,” a spokesperson for U.S. Africa Command (AFRICOM) stated. “The safety and security of our personnel and the sovereignty of Nigeria remain paramount.”

The operation will leverage MQ-9 Reaper drones and other advanced unmanned aerial systems capable of long-endurance surveillance. While the U.S. forces are authorized to operate in a support and advisory capacity, they will not engage in direct ground combat operations unless in self-defense.

This move underscores the deepening military partnership between Washington and Abuja amid persistent security challenges in the Lake Chad region and Northwest Nigeria. Nigerian defense officials welcomed the support, emphasizing that the enhanced intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance (ISR) capabilities would be critical in ongoing operations against terrorist factions and criminal networks.

The deployment follows months of high-level strategic dialogues between the two nations focused on counterterrorism, intelligence sharing, and capacity building.

Details regarding the specific timeline of the deployment and the exact location of the operations remain classified due to operational security concerns.
