The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) today alerts the public to the widespread distribution of fake Kiss Condoms across various markets in Nigeria.
This counterfeit product poses significant health risks and fails to provide reliable protection against unwanted pregnancies and sexually transmitted infections (STIs).
NAFDAC received reports from DKT International Nigeria, a key organization in family planning and HIV/AIDS prevention, highlighting the presence of these falsified condoms. Authorities have identified them in high-traffic areas such as Onitsha Market, Idumota Market, and Trade Fair Market in Lagos, as well as markets in Kano, Abuja, Uyo, Gombe, Enugu, and beyond.
"Counterfeit condoms undermine public health efforts and endanger lives," stated Prof. Mojisola Christianah Adeyeye, Director General of NAFDAC. "We urge Nigerians to verify product authenticity to avoid severe consequences like breakage, infections, allergic reactions, and ineffective contraception."
Genuine Kiss Condoms feature specific markers for identification. Original boxes include detailed instructions, a condom image with specifications in English and French, and proper storage guidelines. They also display the manufacturer's address at Plot 4, Block E, Isolo Industrial Layout, Oshodi-Apapa Expressway.
In addition, fakes often show darker packaging, incorrect addresses like 42 Montgomery Road, Yaba, Lagos, missing medical device information, and inconsistent barcodes.
The counterfeit versions lack sterilization and quality assurance, leading to risks such as STIs including HIV, gonorrhea, and syphilis. NAFDAC emphasizes that users may experience a false sense of security, resulting in unintended health issues.
In response, NAFDAC has directed zonal directors and state coordinators to conduct surveillance and seize these products. The agency advises distributors, retailers, and healthcare professionals to source items only from licensed suppliers and inspect them thoroughly.
