The Legislative Council of Ughelli North Local Government Area in Delta State has impeached its leader, Hon. Ajero Prosper Okeoghene, following serious allegations of gross misconduct and abuse of office. The decision was reached during a plenary session held on Wednesday, January 14, 2026, at the legislative chamber in Ughelli North.

The impeachment resolution was signed by 12 out of the 18 councillors in attendance, meeting the required threshold under the Delta State Local Government Law 2013 as amended.

In a statement released by the councillors, they cited multiple reasons for the action, including misappropriation of funds, high handedness, inability to effectively manage the affairs of the house, gross misconduct, refusal to convene plenary sessions as due, and excessive drunkenness.

"After carefully reviewing the motion for the impeachment of Hon. Ajero Okeoghene Prosper and having thoroughly gone through it, we decided to, as a matter of urgency, resolve to impeach him in line with the relevant Delta Local Government Law 2013 as Amended and other legislative practices/convention," the councillors stated in their resolution.

This development comes amid broader concerns about governance and accountability in local government administrations across Delta State. The council emphasized that the impeachment was necessary to uphold the integrity of the legislative body and ensure effective representation for the people of Ughelli North.

Further details on the transition and appointment of an interim leader will be announced in due course. The Legislative Council remains committed to serving the interests of the community and maintaining transparency in its operations.
