The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) have announced the suspension of their planned solidarity protest in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), originally scheduled for today.

This decision follows productive discussions with key stakeholders, including the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, and the Senate Committee on FCT.

The protest was intended to support workers under the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) who have been on strike since January 19, 2026, over issues including unpaid salaries and poor working conditions.

However, in light of recent developments, including a National Industrial Court order issued on February 2, 2026, restraining the unions from proceeding with the action, the NLC and TUC have opted to halt the demonstration to allow for further dialogue and resolution of the underlying grievances.

In a joint statement, NLC President Comrade Joe Ajaero and TUC President Comrade Festus Osifo emphasized the unions' commitment to workers' rights while prioritizing peaceful resolutions.

"We have engaged constructively with the FCT Minister and other authorities, and we believe this suspension will pave the way for swift implementation of agreements reached, including the payment of outstanding salaries and improvements in working conditions," said Ajaero.

Osifo added, "Our members' welfare remains paramount, and we urge all FCTA workers to resume duties immediately as we continue to monitor the situation closely."

The unions have directed all FCTA employees to return to work with immediate effect, ensuring minimal disruption to public services in the nation's capital. This move comes amid assurances from the FCT Administration that the workers' demands will be addressed promptly, following the minister's concessions during the meeting.

The NLC and TUC remain vigilant and ready to reconvene should the agreements not be honored. Workers are encouraged to report any ongoing issues through their respective union channels.
