The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has issued an urgent demand for the immediate removal of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) Chairman, accusing the electoral umpire of orchestrating a covert scheme to transform Nigeria into a one-party state.
At a high-stakes press briefing today in Abuja, ADC National Leadership alleged that recent administrative directives and operational decisions by the INEC Chairman are deliberately designed to cripple opposition parties ahead of upcoming off-cycle and general elections.
“We have credible intelligence pointing to a systematic plot to undermine democratic pluralism,” stated the ADC National Publicity Secretary. “The current INEC leadership is acting as a willing tool to enforce a de facto one-party state, eroding the very fabric of our constitutional democracy. The Chairman has lost all moral and legal authority to oversee free and fair elections.”
The party specifically cited alleged irregularities in the registration of political parties, selective enforcement of electoral guidelines, and the unexplained delisting of opposition candidates from sensitive internal monitoring portals as evidence of the alleged conspiracy.
Key Demands from the ADC: Immediate Resignation or Sack of the INEC Chairman for gross misconduct and bias. A full, independent judicial inquiry into the commission’s operations since the 2023 general elections. International observer intervention to prevent what the ADC calls “an impending democratic backslide.”
The ADC has called on civil society organizations, the National Assembly, and the international community to intervene before Nigeria’s multi-party system is irreparably damaged.
“We will not stand idly by while our democracy is hijacked,” the ADC warned, adding that peaceful protests and legal actions will follow if their demands are ignored within seven days.
The party concluded by urging all well-meaning Nigerians and opposition parties to unite against what they describe as “the slow death of political competition in Nigeria.”
INEC is yet to issue an official response to the allegations as of press time.
