The Honourable Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, has officially resigned from his position in the Federal Executive Council, marking a significant development in Nigeria’s political landscape ahead of the 2027 general elections.

In a resignation letter dated April 22, 2026, and addressed to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, Adelabu announced that his exit will take effect from April 30, 2026, to ensure a smooth transition and proper handover of responsibilities within the Ministry of Power.

The former minister stated that his decision was driven by his intention to fully dedicate his time and resources to his governorship ambition in Oyo State. This move follows reports that he had secured the consent and support of President Tinubu to pursue the political aspiration.

Adelabu expressed “a deep sense of honour and profound gratitude” for the opportunity to serve in the administration, highlighting his contributions toward reforms in Nigeria’s power sector during his tenure. His time in office was characterized by efforts aimed at strengthening policy frameworks and addressing longstanding challenges in electricity supply.

His resignation comes after weeks of speculation regarding his political future, particularly in light of a presidential directive requiring cabinet members with electoral ambitions to step down.

With this development, Adelabu transitions from federal executive duties to active participation in state-level politics, positioning himself as a key contender in the forthcoming governorship race in Oyo State.

The Presidency is expected to announce interim arrangements to ensure continuity in the operations of the Ministry of Power.
