Her Excellency, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, the First Lady of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, has donated 10,000 sanitary pads to schoolgirls across Kogi State in a bid to promote menstrual hygiene, dignity, and uninterrupted education for adolescent girls.
The donation was distributed to selected public secondary schools in key Local Government Areas of the state, targeting girls in junior and senior secondary classes who face significant challenges accessing menstrual products.
Many girls in rural and semi-urban communities miss school days monthly due to lack of proper sanitary pads, a situation the First Lady described as both a health and educational emergency.
Speaking during the presentation ceremony, Senator Oluremi Tinubu emphasized the importance of supporting the girl child.
“Every girl deserves to learn with dignity and without shame. Access to sanitary pads is not a luxury it is a basic necessity that protects their health, boosts their confidence, and keeps them in school,” she said. “Through this donation, we are sending a clear message: the girl child matters, her future matters, and we will continue to stand by her.”
The initiative forms part of the First Lady’s ongoing interventions under the Renewed Hope Initiative, which focuses on women and youth empowerment, healthcare, and education. The 10,000 packs of sanitary pads were handed over to school authorities and state government representatives for immediate distribution to beneficiaries.
The Kogi State Government welcomed the gesture and pledged to complement the donation with sustained advocacy on menstrual hygiene and the provision of adequate water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) facilities in schools.
This donation is expected to benefit over 5,000 schoolgirls directly and serve as a catalyst for similar interventions across other states.
