A significant movement is gaining momentum within the African Democratic Congress (ADC) as supporters push for a joint presidential ticket featuring former Anambra State Governor Peter Obi and former Kano State Governor Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso for the 2027 general elections. The development has ignited discussions on party unity amid a crowded field of presidential aspirants.

The Obi Kwankwaso (OK) Movement, formally unveiled in Abuja, has rapidly established structures across Nigeria’s 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory. Backers describe the initiative as a coordinated nationwide effort aimed at systemic reform, national rebirth, and uniting key voting blocs by combining Obi’s widespread youth-driven appeal with Kwankwaso’s strong northern grassroots base.

Justin Ijeh, National Publicity Secretary of the OK Movement, stated: “This is more than a political milestone; it is the birth of a coordinated, nationwide engine for systemic reform and national rebirth. We reject the politics of tribalism, regionalism, and religious sentiment.”

Dr. Yunusa Tanko, National Coordinator of the Obidient Movement, echoed this sentiment, noting that collaboration between the Obidient and Kwankwaso groups could achieve significant political success. “Well, since 2023, we started this discussion. It will make a lot of meaning if we have the Obidient and the Kwankwaso group working together, they can climb anything they want to climb.”

The ADC has attracted several high-profile figures with presidential ambitions, including Atiku Abubakar, Rotimi Amaechi, and Mohammed Hayatu-Deen, under the leadership of National Chairman David Mark and National Secretary Rauf Aregbesola. Party leaders view the emerging preferences as a normal part of internal democratic processes.Bolaji Abdullahi, ADC National Publicity Secretary, reassured that the party remains stable: “The party is not worried. It is not unusual for party members to express their preferences, as long as they are not flouting any party rules.”

Peter Obi has consistently called for broader opposition unity. He remarked: “This is the time for all opposition forces and well-meaning Nigerians to set aside their differences and work together in unity of purpose.”

Reactions to the proposed ticket have been mixed. Supporters, including Abba Gwale of a Kwankwaso support group, argue that an Obi-Kwankwaso pairing would improve Nigeria’s prospects.

Former Ekiti State Governor Ayodele Fayose emphasized Obi’s importance to the party’s viability, while some political analysts highlight the potential to reshape voter alignments though they caution that early enthusiasm must translate into votes.

The ADC continues to position itself as a formidable opposition platform, with its internal processes expected to guide the selection of its 2027 presidential candidate. No major faction has broken ranks, and the party leadership maintains that ambitions will be managed through established rules.

As political realignments intensify ahead of the 2027 elections, the push for an Obi-Kwankwaso ticket underscores ongoing efforts to build a cohesive and effective challenge to the ruling party
