A United States senator Ted Cruz has publicly accused the Nigerian government of complicity in the alleged killings of Christians in parts of the country, urging the U.S. government to impose targeted sanctions in response to what was described as a worsening humanitarian and religious freedom crisis.

In a strongly worded statement, the lawmaker expressed deep concern over reports of persistent violence against Christian communities, particularly in Nigeria’s Middle Belt and northern regions. The senator alleged that the Nigerian authorities have failed to take sufficient action to prevent the attacks or hold perpetrators accountable, raising questions about the government’s commitment to protecting vulnerable populations.

“The continued violence and lack of decisive response from Nigerian authorities is deeply troubling,” the senator stated. “The United States cannot remain silent in the face of what appears to be systematic targeting of religious groups.”

The senator called on the U.S. administration to consider a range of measures, including economic and travel sanctions against individuals deemed responsible for enabling or ignoring the violence. The statement also urged the U.S. Department of State to reassess Nigeria’s status concerning international religious freedom obligations.

In response, Nigerian government officials have consistently denied allegations of complicity, maintaining that security challenges in the country are complex and not driven by religious bias. Authorities have pointed to ongoing military and law enforcement operations aimed at curbing insurgency, banditry, and communal clashes across affected regions.

Analysts note that the situation in Nigeria involves multiple overlapping conflicts, including farmer-herder disputes, terrorism, and criminal activities, which complicate narratives around religious persecution.

The development is expected to further strain diplomatic relations between Nigeria and the United States, while also drawing increased international attention to the country’s internal security challenges.

Human rights organizations have called for independent investigations into the alleged killings and have urged both Nigerian authorities and the international community to prioritize civilian protection and accountability.
