Former Ekiti State Governor, Dr. Kayode Fayemi, has disclosed the behind-the-scenes efforts that led to the cordial encounter between President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and Mr. Peter Obi, the 2023 Labour Party presidential candidate, during the inauguration of Pope Leo XIV at the Vatican City in May 2025.
In a recent interview, Dr. Fayemi detailed how he encouraged Mr. Obi, despite initial hesitation, to approach and greet President Tinubu, who was seated among other world leaders at the historic event. The moment, which has been widely shared across media platforms, highlighted a rare display of unity and sportsmanship among key Nigerian political figures.
According to accounts corroborated by Presidential Spokesperson, Mr. Bayo Onanuga, Dr. Fayemi spotted President Tinubu and urged Mr. Obi to join him in paying homage to the Nigerian leader. Upon reaching the President, Dr. Fayemi broke the ice with the remark: “Mr. President, welcome to our church, and thank you for honouring the Pope with your presence.”
President Tinubu, known for his quick wit, responded humorously: “I should be the one welcoming you and Peter. I’m the head of the Nigerian delegation.” This elicited laughter from Mr. Obi, who replied in agreement, “Yes, indeed. We are members of your delegation.” The exchange was marked by warmth, laughter, and mutual respect.
Dr. Fayemi, a Catholic like Mr. Obi, emphasized the significance of the gesture in fostering national unity beyond political differences, especially in an international and spiritual setting. President Tinubu, a Muslim, led Nigeria’s official delegation to the Papal inauguration.
The encounter has been praised by many Nigerians as a positive symbol of maturity in the nation’s political landscape, demonstrating that political rivalry need not preclude personal respect and patriotic camaraderie.
