The Office of the Minister-designate for Power, Engineer Joseph Olasunkanmi Tegbe, wishes to address recent media reports claiming that the Minister-designate promised to fix Nigeria’s power grid within three months.
These reports are inaccurate and represent a misrepresentation of Mr. Tegbe’s remarks during his Senate screening on May 6, 2026.
In a statement issued by his spokesperson, Adeola Adelabu, the Minister-designate emphasized that no such commitment was made. “Our attention has been drawn to inaccurate media reports alleging that the Honourable Minister-designate, Joseph Olasunkanmi Tegbe, promised to fix Nigeria’s power grid within three months. This claim is a clear misrepresentation of his remarks. At his Senate screening on May 6, 2026, Mr. Tegbe made no such commitment,” the statement read.
Mr. Tegbe assured the Senate that initial efforts to stabilise the national grid would commence within his first 100 days in office, while broader structural reforms in the sector are expected to take approximately one year. These timelines remain subject to detailed diagnostics and wide-ranging consultations with stakeholders.
The proposed reforms will focus on key areas including: Improving sector credibility and investor confidence. Addressing gas supply challenges. Expanding electricity metering across the country. Stabilising the national grid. Modernising electricity infrastructure. Enhancing commercial frameworks. Enforcing accountability across the entire power value chain
“My promise to this chamber is that Nigerians will see visible improvement in the sector,” Tegbe told senators during the screening. He further pledged to protect vulnerable consumers in any tariff reforms while ensuring long-term sustainability.
Engineer Joseph Olasunkanmi Tegbe, a seasoned engineer and public policy expert, was nominated by President Bola Tinubu as Minister of Power following a recent cabinet reshuffle. He remains committed to transparency, constructive engagement with the media, and delivering measurable progress in resolving Nigeria’s long-standing power challenges.
