President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has confirmed the successful elimination of a senior Islamic State (ISIS) leader, Abu-Bilal Al-Manuki (also known as Abu-Mainok or Abubakar Mainok), in a joint military operation conducted by Nigerian and United States forces in the Lake Chad Basin.
The operation, which took place on May 15, 2026, targeted the terrorist leader’s compound and resulted in the deaths of Al-Manuki along with several of his lieutenants. Early assessments confirm the strike dealt a significant blow to ISIS operations, particularly those linked to the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP).
In a statement, President Tinubu said: “Our determined Nigerian Armed Forces, working closely with the Armed Forces of the United States, conducted a daring joint operation that dealt a heavy blow to the ranks of the Islamic State. Early assessments confirm the elimination of the wanted IS senior leader, Abu-Bilal Al-Manuki, also known as Abu-Mainok, along with several of his lieutenants, during a strike on his compound in the Lake Chad Basin.”
The President described the mission as a testament to the strengthening partnership between Nigeria and the United States in the global fight against terrorism. He extended gratitude to US President Donald Trump and the American forces for their collaboration and intelligence support.
US President Donald Trump had earlier announced the success of the operation, describing Al-Manuki as the second-in-command of ISIS globally and noting that the meticulously planned mission eliminated a key figure who had been directing terrorist activities from Africa.
This development underscores Nigeria’s commitment to rooting out terrorism and insurgency in the Lake Chad region and beyond, while highlighting enhanced international cooperation in counter-terrorism efforts.
The joint Nigeria-US operation reflects ongoing efforts to disrupt ISIS networks operating in West Africa. Abu-Bilal Al-Manuki was a high-value target with alleged involvement in coordinating attacks and funding terrorist activities in the region.
President Tinubu reaffirmed that the Nigerian government and its security forces remain resolute in ensuring the safety and security of all citizens and will continue to work with international partners to dismantle terrorist networks.
