Acclaimed Nollywood actress, producer, and director Genevieve Nnaji is set to make a highly anticipated acting comeback in Wahala, a gripping new six-part drama series from BBC Studios.
The series, adapted from the debut novel by Nikki May and written by BAFTA-nominated Theresa Ikoko, will stream on BBC iPlayer and air on BBC One. Produced by Firebird Pictures under BBC Studios, Wahala (Nigerian Pidgin for “trouble”) is a female-led thriller that follows four Nigerian-British women as they navigate friendship, careers, love, family, betrayal, and long-buried secrets in contemporary London.
Nnaji joins an outstanding ensemble cast featuring Adelayo Adedayo, Deborah Ayorinde, Cush Jumbo, and Susan Wokoma. The story revolves around the close-knit friendship of Simi, Boo, and Ronke (played by Adedayo, Jumbo, and Wokoma), which is upended by the arrival of Isobel (Ayorinde).
Expressing her enthusiasm for the project, Nnaji said: “I’m very happy to be joining Wahala and to be working with such a brilliant team. It’s an intriguing story and I’m excited to be a part of it.”
This marks one of Nnaji’s most significant on-screen roles in recent years, following her acclaimed directorial debut with Lionheart (2018), which premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival and became the first Nigerian film acquired by Netflix. Widely regarded as one of Nollywood’s most influential and talented figures, Nnaji has cultivated a dedicated global fanbase that has eagerly awaited her return to acting.
Wahala promises to deliver a compelling blend of drama, cultural nuance, and suspense, highlighting authentic Nigerian-British experiences and strong female storytelling.
