President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has given formal approval for Nigeria to host the prestigious 2026 Confederation of African Football (CAF) Awards and the 48th CAF Ordinary General Assembly.

This landmark decision underscores Nigeria’s growing stature as a powerhouse in African football and the Federal Government’s commitment to strengthening sports infrastructure and continental collaboration. The events are expected to bring together presidents of CAF’s 54 member associations, zonal union representatives, senior African football officials, players, coaches, and stakeholders from across the continent.

The approval follows a high-level meeting between President Tinubu’s representatives and CAF President Dr. Patrice Motsepe at the Africa Forward Summit in Nairobi, Kenya. The Nigerian delegation included Minister of Foreign Affairs, Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu, Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) President Ibrahim Musa Gusau, former NFF President Amaju Melvin Pinnick, and CAF Acting General Secretary Samson Adamu.

Nigeria’s rich football heritage, passionate fan base, world-class facilities, and history of successfully hosting major international events make it an ideal destination for this continental celebration of excellence in African football. The 2026 CAF Awards will honour outstanding achievements by players, coaches, and teams across various categories for the 2025/2026 season.

Speaking on the development, the Presidency expressed confidence that hosting these events will boost tourism, create economic opportunities, and inspire the next generation of Nigerian and African athletes.

Quote from the Presidency: “President Tinubu’s approval reflects his vision for a stronger, more united Africa through sports. Nigeria is ready to deliver a world-class hosting experience that celebrates African football excellence while showcasing our country’s potential as a leading destination for major international gatherings.”

The Federal Government, in collaboration with the NFF and other stakeholders, will establish a high-powered Local Organising Committee to ensure seamless preparation and execution of the events.
