Anambra State Executive Council has approved a new strategic plan aimed at combating devastating gully erosion across the state while simultaneously addressing the acute shortage of student accommodation in higher institutions.

The multifaceted initiative combines aggressive erosion control measures with targeted investments in student housing infrastructure, reflecting the state government’s commitment to environmental sustainability and educational development.

Governor Charles Soludo emphasized the urgency of the plan: “Erosion remains an existential threat to our communities, farmlands, and infrastructure. At the same time, our students deserve safe, affordable, and conducive living environments. This integrated approach will protect lives and property while supporting human capital development.”

Key components of the approved plan include: Accelerated implementation of erosion control projects in high-risk areas using advanced engineering solutions and community participation. Public-private partnerships to develop modern student hostels and residential facilities near major tertiary institutions.

Sustainable land management practices and reforestation programs to mitigate future erosion risks. Funding allocation from state resources and potential development partners to ensure timely execution.

The plan is expected to create jobs, boost local economies, and provide long-term resilience against climate-related challenges while easing the burden on students and their families.

This bold initiative underscores Anambra State’s proactive leadership in addressing critical developmental challenges.
