Senator Adams Oshiomhole, representing Edo North, has called on the Federal Government of Nigeria to take decisive economic action against South African companies operating in the country by seizing or appropriating their profits to compensate Nigerian victims of xenophobic attacks in South Africa.

Speaking during a Senate plenary session debating the safety and dignity of Nigerians abroad, Senator Oshiomhole highlighted the recurring violence against Nigerians in South Africa, including looting of properties, burning of shops, and loss of lives. He argued that Nigeria should respond with reciprocity rather than relying solely on diplomacy or taxpayer-funded compensation.

“We can’t force South Africa to accept our citizens, but we also cannot force ourselves to accept their corporate citizens,” Oshiomhole stated. He specifically pointed to major South African firms such as MTN, MultiChoice (DStv), and others, noting the substantial profits they repatriate from Nigeria while Nigerian nationals face hostility and economic exclusion in South Africa.

The senator proposed nationalizing or revoking licenses of these companies where appropriate, allowing Nigerian entities to take over operations and redirect profits toward victim compensation. He emphasized that the lives of Nigerian citizens hold greater value than foreign investments and called for using economic leverage to protect nationals.

This strong stance comes amid fresh reports of xenophobic incidents and a reported refusal by South African authorities to adequately compensate affected Nigerians, particularly those in informal settlements. Senator Oshiomhole urged the Senate and Federal Government to move beyond condemnations and adopt practical measures that demonstrate Nigeria’s commitment to its citizens.

The Nigerian Senate continues to push for urgent diplomatic engagement with South Africa on the issue.
