In a significant boost to the agricultural value chain and youth empowerment, the Kano State Government has distributed essential tools and equipment to 1,900 butchers across the state, aimed at enhancing productivity, improving hygiene standards, and strengthening the local meat processing sector.
The initiative, part of broader efforts to support small-scale entrepreneurs and promote food safety, equips beneficiaries with modern butchering tools, protective gear, and related equipment to upgrade their operations and increase efficiency.
Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf, while flagging off the distribution, emphasized the administration’s commitment to empowering critical stakeholders in the livestock sector. “Our butchers play a vital role in food security and the economy of Kano State,” the Governor said. “By providing these tools, we are not only improving their livelihoods but also ensuring safer, higher-quality meat for our people. This is about dignity, productivity, and building a modern, sustainable meat industry.”
The empowerment program targets butchers from various local government areas, with a focus on those operating in traditional abattoirs and markets. Beneficiaries expressed gratitude for the support, noting that the tools will reduce manual labor, minimize waste, and enable better business outcomes.
This intervention aligns with the state’s ongoing investments in modern slaughterhouses, livestock development, and skills training, complementing projects such as the construction of new abattoirs in multiple LGAs to promote best practices in meat handling and public health.
The Kano State Government continues to prioritize agriculture, livestock, and entrepreneurship as pillars of economic diversification and poverty reduction, with similar empowerment programs reaching thousands of youths and small business owners in recent years.
