Ogun State Governor Dapo Abiodun has said that state governors, not President Bola Tinubu, should explain how the extra money from the removal of petrol subsidy is being used.
Abiodun spoke on Thursday at an All Progressives Congress (APC) rally in Ijebu-Ode, Ogun State. He was responding to opposition politicians who have been asking the President to account for the gains from ending the fuel subsidy.
The governor said the removal of subsidies increased the money that goes to state governments every month. Because of this, governors are the ones who receive and spend the extra funds, so they should be the ones to explain how the money is used.
“They said they want to return the subsidy. Are they mad? They were asking our leader to explain what he did with subsidy removal gains,” Abiodun said. “It is we (governors) that should make such explanations because it is we, state governors, that collect the money.”
He added that the extra money has been used to build roads, schools, housing, and support farmers in the states.
“Besides, what have we been using to build roads, schools, provide good housing and incentives for farmers? Isn’t it from subsidy?” he asked.
The Federal Government has said the removal of petrol subsidy saved about N15.8 trillion for the whole country between June 2023 and December 2025. A large part of this money went to states and local governments through monthly allocations.
