The Sokoto State Government has ordered the immediate closure of the Musa Lukuwa Jumu’at Mosque in Mabera, Sokoto metropolis, following the stabbing of Islamic cleric Musa Lukuwa and the subsequent killing of his alleged attacker by worshippers.
The government declared the mosque a crime scene and directed that it remain closed until further notice. It also ordered a comprehensive investigation into the attack and the killing that occurred at the mosque.
The directives were contained in a statement issued on Tuesday by Abubakar Bawa, Director-General of Media and Publicity, Government House.
The incident took place shortly after Lukuwa led the Jumu’at prayer on Friday. Worshippers overpowered the alleged attacker, who had stabbed the cleric, and beat him to death. Lukuwa survived the attack and received treatment at a specialist hospital in Sokoto before being discharged.
In addition, the state government constituted a committee of Islamic scholars (Ulamas) to examine the immediate and remote causes of the recent religious tensions in parts of the metropolis. The committee will advise the government on appropriate measures to prevent a recurrence and promote lasting peace.
Bawa stated: “The government has ordered a full investigation into the attack and killing at Musa Lukuwa Jumu’at Mosque, Mabera, and ordered the closure of the mosque (crime scene) till further notice.”
The government dissociated itself from any person, irrespective of status, who hides under the pretext of religion to undermine or disrespect Prophet Muhammad (PBUH), his parents, household and companions. It reaffirmed its total obedience and respect for the Prophet and urged residents to continue demonstrating love and compassion towards him.
