The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) plans to release eNaira version 2.0 with a focus on expanding the role of deposit money banks and empowering them to drive adoption. The new version will introduce several important features to enhance the eNaira's functionality and drive adoption in both the public and private sectors.

The eNaira will enable transactions even without an internet connection, making it more accessible in areas with limited connectivity.

eNaira 2.0 will introduce programmable money features, allowing for more advanced and automated transactions. This will further integrate the eNaira into both online and offline government activities.

The CBN will work closely with governments at all levels to drive adoption and increase usage of the eNaira.

Version 2.0 will focus on wholesale Central Bank Digital Currency (CBDC) to increase the participation of deposit money banks and empower them to drive adoption.

The digital currency enables quicker and more cost-effective transactions compared to traditional methods.

The eNaira aims to integrate millions of unbanked Nigerians into the formal financial system by providing a simple and accessible digital payment option.

While the eNaira has struggled with adoption since its launch in 2021, the CBN remains committed to enhancing the digital currency and driving its usage through innovative features and increased collaboration with stakeholders. The release of eNaira version 2.0 is expected to further boost the adoption and usage of the digital currency in Nigeria.
