In a landmark development for public health and pharmaceutical innovation, the Government of China has announced plans to establish Africa’s first local insulin production facility in Nigeria. The initiative is set to revolutionize diabetes care across the continent by improving access to affordable, life-saving insulin for millions of patients.

The facility, which will be constructed in partnership with Nigeria’s Ministry of Health and leading Chinese biotech firms, is expected to be fully operational by 2027. It will be located in Ogun State, a region known for its growing industrial base and proximity to major health institutions.

“This project is a game-changer for Nigeria and Africa at large,” said Dr. Tunji Alausa, Nigeria’s Minister of Health. “It will reduce our dependence on imported insulin, lower treatment costs, and save countless lives.”

The announcement was made during a bilateral health summit held in Beijing, where Chinese officials reaffirmed their commitment to supporting Africa’s healthcare infrastructure under the Belt and Road Initiative. The insulin facility will feature state-of-the-art technology and adhere to international standards for pharmaceutical manufacturing.

“We are proud to partner with Nigeria on this historic venture,” stated Mr. Liu Jin, Director of China’s National Health Commission. “This is not just about medicine—it’s about building resilience and empowering communities.”

With over 5 million Nigerians currently living with diabetes, the demand for insulin continues to rise. The new facility will produce both human and analog insulin formulations, ensuring a steady supply for domestic use and regional distribution.
