The House of Representatives has formally requested detailed documentation and evidence regarding the reported ₦2.4 trillion payment made to contractors by the Federal Government. The request comes amid growing concerns over transparency, accountability, and the integrity of public expenditure in Nigeria’s infrastructure and procurement sectors.

During a plenary session held on Monday, members of the House Committee on Public Accounts raised questions about the disbursement, citing discrepancies in records submitted by the Ministry of Finance and the Bureau of Public Procurement (BPP).

Hon. Wale Raji, Chairman of the Committee, stated: “We are not on a witch-hunt. We are simply fulfilling our constitutional mandate to ensure that public funds are used judiciously and in accordance with the law.”

Several lawmakers expressed concern that the payments may have bypassed legislative oversight, with some calling for a full forensic audit of the transactions.

The ₦2.4 trillion figure represents one of the largest single-year contractor payments in Nigeria’s history. While the government has defended the expenditure as necessary for critical infrastructure development—including roads, bridges, and energy projects—lawmakers insist that transparency must accompany such large-scale spending.

The House has given relevant ministries and agencies a two-week deadline to submit all supporting documents, including payment vouchers, project execution reports, and contractor profiles. Failure to comply may trigger summons or further investigative hearings.
