A nationwide blackout is imminent following a coordinated industrial action by electricity workers across Nigeria, who have officially downed tools in protest over unresolved labor grievances.
The National Union of Electricity Employees (NUEE) announced the strike earlier today, citing long-standing issues including unpaid salaries, poor working conditions, and stalled negotiations with government agencies. The union emphasized that repeated appeals for intervention have gone unanswered, leaving workers with no choice but to take drastic action.
“This is not a decision we made lightly,” said Comrade Martin Uzo, spokesperson for NUEE. “Our members have endured months of hardship. We demand accountability, fair treatment, and immediate resolution of our demands.”
The Federal Ministry of Power has acknowledged the strike and called for urgent dialogue. Minister of Power, Engr. Adebayo Lawal, urged workers to return to duty while negotiations continue: “We understand their concerns and are committed to resolving them. However, the nation cannot afford a total blackout.”
