The Senate of the Federal Republic of Nigeria has formally responded to Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan’s request to resume legislative duties, stating unequivocally that her six-month suspension remains in force pending the outcome of ongoing judicial proceedings.
In a letter dated September 4, 2025, signed by the Acting Clerk to the National Assembly, Dr. Yahaya Danzaria, the Senate acknowledged receipt of Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan’s notification of her intent to return to plenary. However, the Red Chamber clarified that her suspension, which began on March 6, 2025, is still active and cannot be administratively reversed until the Court of Appeal delivers its ruling on the matter.
“The matter remains sub judice, and until the judicial process is concluded, no administrative action can be taken to facilitate your resumption,” the Senate stated in its official correspondence.
Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan, representing Kogi Central, was suspended following allegations of misconduct and insubordination during plenary sessions, including a dispute over seating arrangements involving Senate President Godswill Akpabio. The suspension was enforced based on recommendations from the Senate Committee on Ethics, Privileges and Public Petitions.
Despite her legal challenge and claims of a favorable judgment, the Senate maintains that no action will be taken until the appellate court rules definitively. Her previous attempt to re-enter the National Assembly in July ended in a standoff, with security operatives denying her access.
