The Rivers State Government has officially commenced its transition from emergency rule to democratic governance, marking the beginning of a new chapter with an interdenominational Thanksgiving Service held at the Ecumenical Centre, Abonima Wharf Road, Port Harcourt.
The service, scheduled for Sunday, September 14, 2025, at 10:00 AM, will bring together key stakeholders from across the state, including permanent secretaries, local government chairmen, heads of security and paramilitary agencies, traditional rulers, captains of industry, and members of governing boards. All guests have been requested to be seated by 9:30 AM.
Vice Admiral Ibok-Ete Ibas (Rtd), the Sole Administrator appointed by President Bola Tinubu during the emergency period, will serve as the Special Guest of Honour. His administration, which began on March 18, 2025, was tasked with restoring peace, stabilizing governance, and safeguarding the state’s vital economic assets following months of political unrest.
In a statement issued by the Secretary to the State Government, Professor Ibibia Lucky Worika, the Thanksgiving Service is described as a symbolic gesture of gratitude and unity, celebrating the resilience of the people of Rivers State and the successful fulfillment of the presidential mandate.
“This service is not just a ceremony—it is a reaffirmation of our collective commitment to peace, progress, and democratic values,” said Prof. Worika.
The transition comes after a turbulent period marked by political clashes, legislative disputes, and security challenges. With calm now restored, the Rivers State Government looks ahead to the formation of an elected government and the full restoration of civil authority.
