In a compelling statement that has stirred national and international discourse, Professor Bola Akinterinwa, former Director-General of the Nigerian Institute of International Affairs (NIIA), has drawn a bold comparison between President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and U.S. President Donald Trump, describing Tinubu as “as intelligent, if not more intelligent” and “more cautious and strategic” than his American counterpart.
Speaking during a live interview on Channels Television, Prof. Akinterinwa addressed concerns surrounding President Tinubu’s absence from the 80th United Nations General Assembly (UNGA), emphasizing that the decision should not be misconstrued as a sign of weakness or disengagement from global affairs. He noted that Vice President Kashim Shettima’s representation at the summit was in line with diplomatic protocol and strategic positioning.
“In diplomacy, water must always find its own level,” Akinterinwa stated. “A vice president at such forums cannot easily interact with presidents, who are his seniors in protocol. Tinubu’s absence is not a lack of capacity—it’s a calculated move.”
The former NIIA chief elaborated on Tinubu’s strategic mindset, likening it to Trump’s assertive approach to global politics. However, he stressed that Tinubu’s style is more measured and deliberate.
“Donald Trump thinks after action, not before action,” Akinterinwa said. “Tinubu, on the other hand, is more cautious and strategic. He understands the nuances of international diplomacy and is charting an independent course for Nigeria.”
This statement comes amid growing interest in Nigeria’s foreign policy direction and its evolving role on the global stage. Tinubu’s administration has prioritized economic reform, regional stability, and strategic partnerships, including recent engagements with U.S. representatives to deepen ties in energy, infrastructure, and security.
