Renowned Nollywood actor Yemi Solade has ignited widespread conversation across Nigeria’s entertainment landscape following his candid remarks on the financial realities of acting in Nollywood. Speaking on the Honest Bunch podcast, Solade declared that no actress in the industry can credibly claim to have purchased a luxury Mercedes-Benz G-Wagon solely from acting income.
“No actress will say the G-Wagon she has was bought with the money from acting,” Solade stated emphatically, adding, “It’s possible from producing, but from acting? How much do they want to pay you, 50 million?”
Solade’s comments come amid growing public scrutiny of celebrity lifestyles and the perceived disconnect between on-screen earnings and off-screen opulence. The actor emphasized that while Nollywood offers visibility and fame, the financial compensation for acting roles remains insufficient to fund such extravagant purchases.
He further suggested that many actresses may rely on side hustles, endorsements, or even gifts to sustain their luxurious lifestyles. “Some have side hustles, I don’t know what those hustles are,” he said. “Then again, some of those cars are gifts. Yes now, dem fit gift person G-Wagon.”
The remarks have sparked a flurry of reactions from fans, industry insiders, and fellow actors, with some defending the financial independence of top actresses, while others echo Solade’s concerns about transparency and income sources in Nollywood.
Yemi Solade, a respected figure with over three decades in the industry, is known for his outspoken views and deep understanding of the Nigerian film sector. His latest comments have reignited discussions about the sustainability of acting careers, the pressures of celebrity culture, and the evolving dynamics of Nollywood’s economic structure.
