In a dramatic turn of events, Governor Douye Diri of Bayelsa State has officially resigned from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), marking a significant shake-up in Nigeria’s political landscape.

Governor Diri made the announcement during a cabinet meeting held at the Government House in Yenagoa, citing “very obvious reasons” for his departure. “Today, I have formally resigned my membership of the Peoples Democratic Party,” Diri stated. “I am grateful to all my friends and supporters who have stood by us and with us. Together, we will continue to build a strong, virile Bayelsa State and a strong and virile country by extension.”

The resignation was not a solitary move. Speaker of the Bayelsa State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Abraham Ngobere, along with 23 lawmakers, also tendered their resignation from the PDP, signaling a coordinated political realignment within the state’s leadership.

This development comes just 24 hours after Governor Peter Mbah of Enugu State defected to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), intensifying speculation about a broader wave of defections from the PDP. With Diri’s exit, the PDP now controls only eight states nationwide.

As of press time, Governor Diri has not declared his next political affiliation, leaving observers and constituents awaiting further announcements. The Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Mr. Daniel Alabrah, confirmed the resignation via his verified social media account, adding credibility to the unfolding events.
