In a landmark political development, Governor Peter Ndubuisi Mbah of Enugu State formally announced his defection from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC) during a widely attended ceremony in Enugu on October 14, 2025. His address marked a pivotal moment in the state’s political trajectory, emphasizing unity, federal alignment, and sustained development.
“Today, I stand before you to announce a break from the past,” Mbah declared, describing the move as a “bold and conscious step” to secure Enugu’s future through stronger political alignment.
He emphasized that the decision was not whimsical but the result of “long reflection” and a collective resolution by his political family in Enugu State.
Mbah praised President Bola Tinubu’s administration for delivering “unprecedented attention and support” to Enugu, citing federal policies that have brought “massive benefits” to the state.
“We cannot afford to remain isolated from the centre,” he stated, underscoring the strategic importance of aligning with the federal government to unlock further opportunities for growth.
Governor Mbah’s defection was accompanied by a wave of support from his appointees and political allies, many of whom also joined the APC. He reaffirmed his commitment to the people of Enugu, promising that the shift would not disrupt the development strides already underway.
He described the move as a way to “reshape Enugu and reorganize the politics of the state”, ensuring that the state remains competitive and connected in Nigeria’s evolving political landscape.
Mbah pledged to continue delivering on his administration’s promises, stating that the defection would “strengthen Enugu’s future” and enhance its access to federal resources.
The defection ceremony signals a significant shift in Enugu’s political dynamics, potentially altering the balance of power in the Southeast region. It also reflects a growing trend of regional leaders seeking closer ties with the federal government to accelerate development.
