The Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) has officially declared that Nnamdi Kanu, the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), is medically fit to stand trial. This follows a court-ordered health assessment conducted by a panel of experts empanelled by the NMA President, in response to conflicting medical reports previously submitted by both the prosecution and defense teams.

The panel’s findings were presented to the Federal High Court in Abuja on October 13, during proceedings presided over by Justice James Omotosho. According to the report, Kanu’s ailment is not life-threatening, and he is deemed physically and mentally capable of participating in his ongoing terrorism trial.

Justice Omotosho had earlier mandated the independent medical evaluation to resolve disputes over Kanu’s health status, which had become a contentious issue in the courtroom. The prosecution team, led by Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN) Adegboyega Awomolo, submitted the NMA panel’s report, part of which was read aloud in open court during Thursday’s session.

In light of the panel’s conclusions and the absence of objections from either legal team, Justice Omotosho affirmed the court’s confidence in the report and ruled that the trial would proceed without further delay.

This development marks a significant turning point in the high-profile case, which has drawn national and international attention due to its political and legal implications. Kanu, who has been in custody since his extradition in 2021, faces multiple charges including terrorism and incitement.
