President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved the appointment of Professor Oluwatoyin Temitayo Ogundipe as the Chairman of the Governing Board of the National Universities Commission (NUC).
Professor Ogundipe, a distinguished academic and former Vice-Chancellor of the University of Lagos (UNILAG), brings a wealth of experience in university administration, research, and higher education leadership to the position. He succeeds Emeritus Professor Olufemi Raphael Aina, who resigned from the role after less than one year in office.
Announcing the appointment, Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, stated that the move is part of efforts to strengthen leadership and regulatory oversight of Nigeria’s university system. “President Tinubu is committed to repositioning Nigeria’s tertiary education sector for greater efficiency, global competitiveness, and sustainable development,” Onanuga noted.
Professor Ogundipe is a renowned botanist and Fellow of the Nigerian Academy of Science. He served as Vice-Chancellor of UNILAG from 2017 to 2022 and has held several leadership positions, including Pro-Chancellor of Redeemer’s University. His academic contributions and administrative expertise are expected to drive key reforms in university governance, quality assurance, and innovation across Nigeria’s higher education institutions.
The President expressed confidence that Professor Ogundipe’s proven track record will advance the goals of the Renewed Hope Agenda, particularly in enhancing university funding, research output, and institutional stability.
Professor Ogundipe will assume duty immediately and work with the existing board members inaugurated in November 2025.
