The Center for Reform and Public Advocacy (CFRPA), a civil society organization, has formally petitioned the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to investigate and clarify the eligibility of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for the 2027 presidential election, citing concerns over the authenticity of his academic certificates.
In a petition dated June 19, 2026, and received by INEC headquarters in Abuja, the group, through a consortium of lawyers led by Barrister Kalu Agu, demanded a thorough probe into the Chicago State University certificate and other educational qualifications submitted by President Tinubu during his 2023 nomination process.
The petition seeks to reopen scrutiny of the documents used to secure clearance for the 2023 election, arguing that unresolved questions around their authenticity raise constitutional issues regarding his eligibility for future contests. The group has threatened legal action should INEC fail to respond appropriately and transparently.
CFRPA described the move as a necessary step to uphold the integrity of Nigeria’s electoral process and ensure that only candidates who fully meet constitutional requirements participate in the 2027 presidential poll.
“Public office demands the highest standards of transparency and accountability. Nigerians deserve clarity on this matter before the next election cycle begins in earnest,” the group stated in the petition.
The organization called on INEC to make public its findings and take necessary actions in line with the Electoral Act and constitutional provisions to protect the sanctity of the democratic process.
This development revives long-standing debates surrounding presidential qualifications and comes as political activities intensify ahead of the 2027 general elections.
