The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) confirms that the Super Eagles have safely arrived in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, following a mid-air emergency that disrupted their travel plans ahead of Tuesday’s crucial 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifying match against Benin Republic.

The team’s chartered ValueJet aircraft, en route from Polokwane, South Africa, made an emergency return to Luanda, Angola, on Saturday after a loud crack was detected in the aircraft’s windshield just 25 minutes after takeoff. The pilot executed a precautionary U-turn and landed safely in Luanda, ensuring the safety of all passengers, which included players, coaching staff, and government officials.

Emergency logistics were swiftly activated, and a replacement aircraft was dispatched from Lagos to convey the team to Uyo. The Super Eagles touched down at Victor Attah International Airport at exactly 8:05 a.m. on Sunday morning. The team then proceeded to their accommodation at Four Points by Sheraton Hotel to begin final preparations for the match.

“We are grateful for the professionalism of the flight crew and the swift response from our logistics team,” said NFF spokesperson Ademola Olajire. “The safety of our players and officials is paramount, and we’re relieved that everyone is safe and focused on the upcoming fixture.”

The Super Eagles are scheduled to face the Cheetahs of Benin Republic at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium on Tuesday, October 14. The match marks the final group stage encounter in Nigeria’s campaign to secure a spot in the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
