A mutinied army unit in Madagascar has declared control over the nation’s military forces, escalating tensions in the capital and prompting President Andry Rajoelina to warn of an “attempt to seize power illegally.” The unfolding crisis marks a dramatic turn in a weeks-long wave of anti-government protests that have gripped the country.

The CAPSAT contingent, composed of administrative and technical officers, announced on Sunday that it would assume command of all branches of the Malagasy military — land, air, and naval forces. In a video statement, the officers proclaimed that “from now on, all orders of the Malagasy army will originate from CAPSAT headquarters,” and named General Demosthene Pikulas as the new head of the armed forces.

This declaration follows the unit’s public refusal to carry out orders to suppress demonstrators, citing concerns over police brutality and the deaths of several protesters. On Saturday, CAPSAT officers joined thousands of civilians in the city center, signaling a major shift in the protest movement that began over two weeks ago.

President Rajoelina responded swiftly, accusing unnamed actors of orchestrating a coup. “An attempted illegal and forcible seizure of power is under way,” he stated, reaffirming that he remains in the country and is actively managing national affairs.

The protests, largely led by youth and fueled by grievances over water and electricity shortages, have evolved into the most serious challenge to Rajoelina’s administration since he took office. The involvement of elite military units has intensified concerns about the stability of Madagascar’s democratic institutions.

International observers are closely monitoring the situation, urging restraint and dialogue. The government has yet to confirm whether General Pikulas’s appointment is recognized officially, and the status of the broader military remains uncertain.
