The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has publicly defended his recent confrontation with a naval officer over a disputed parcel of land in the Gaduwa District of Abuja, asserting that the FCT Administration will not tolerate impunity or unlawful occupation of government property.
During a press briefing ahead of the FCT Executive Council meeting, Minister Wike addressed the incident involving Lieutenant A.M. Yerima, who was reportedly stationed to guard the land, was allegedly linked to retired Chief of Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Awwal Zubairu Gambo. Wike condemned the deployment of serving military personnel to secure private interests, describing it as a breach of protocol and an affront to lawful governance.
“How can I sit as a minister when government officials are being attacked and beaten up, officials at the level of directors? And I’ll just sit in my office doing what?” Wike stated emphatically.
The minister emphasized that the FCT Administration operates strictly by law and will not be intimidated by rank or status. He dismissed social media claims suggesting hostility toward the Nigerian military, labeling them as “false and mischievous.” Wike reiterated that no individual, regardless of their background, is above the law.
“Because you are a security aide to someone does not mean you can act above the law. If you shoot at someone unlawfully, you will face justice. No one is above the law,” he declared.
The confrontation, which occurred at Plot 1946, Buffer Transit, Southern Parkway, has sparked widespread public debate. A video of the exchange showed Wike challenging the legitimacy of the land’s acquisition, while the naval officer insisted it was legally obtained. The minister ultimately ordered the officer to vacate the premises.
While some critics have called for restraint, others have praised Wike’s firm stance against land-grabbing and abuse of power. The FCT Administration has pledged to continue enforcing land regulations and protecting public assets from unauthorized occupation.
