Senate President Godswill Akpabio has proclaimed himself the highest-ranked Christian in the Nigerian government, attributing his remarkable political ascent to divine grace and favor.
Speaking at the blessing and official commissioning of the Regina Coeli Parish Rectory in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, Akpabio urged Nigerians to remain committed to serving God in all aspects of life.
The event, attended by prominent clerics and political leaders, highlighted Akpabio's journey from obscurity to becoming Nigeria's third-highest official. "As the most ranked Christian in government, God has specially and graciously transformed and prepared me for the task ahead," Akpabio stated.
He emphasized his affiliation with all Christian denominations while expressing pride in his Catholic faith. "I belong to all denominations, but I am lucky and happy to be a Catholic," he added.
Akpabio reflected on divine intervention in his career, noting, "If God can raise me from a nobody to be the President of the Senate and by extension, the number three citizen of this great country, He can do it for us all—just position and prepare yourself."
He encouraged contributions to church projects, no matter how small, as acts pleasing to God. Additionally, the Senate President announced upcoming plans to commission a new worship center within the National Assembly complex in Abuja, inviting Nigerians to participate.
The Catholic Bishop of Uyo, Most Rev. John Ayah, commended Akpabio for his support, including hosting the Catholic Bishops Conference earlier in the year. He advised the Senate President to ignore detractors, recognizing the challenges of high office.
Akpabio's remarks underscore the intersection of faith and politics in Nigeria, inspiring many to seek spiritual grounding amid national leadership roles.
