Vice President Kashim Shettima has departed Abuja for Belém, Brazil, where he will represent President Bola Ahmed Tinubu at the 30th session of the United Nations Climate Change Conference, COP30. The summit, scheduled for November 6–7, will convene global leaders, development partners, and business executives to address urgent climate challenges under the theme “Climate Action and Implementation.”
The conference, hosted by Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, will focus on key issues including adaptation strategies, forest conservation, biodiversity protection, and climate justice. Nigeria’s participation underscores its commitment to global climate goals and its pursuit of sustainable development.
Vice President Shettima is expected to engage in high-level discussions aimed at securing carbon market deals worth up to $3 billion. These negotiations will support Nigeria’s climate finance strategy and enhance its capacity to implement green initiatives across sectors.
According to Stanley Nkwocha, Media Assistant to the Vice President, Shettima will present Nigeria’s climate action roadmap during the general plenary session. He will also participate in the launch of the Tropical Forest Forever Fund, a global initiative to protect rainforest ecosystems.
During his visit, Vice President Shettima will join a roundtable chaired by President Lula focused on Climate and Nature, where leaders will share best practices and forge partnerships for environmental resilience. He is also scheduled to attend an Amazonian Cocktail for Heads of Delegation, providing an opportunity for informal diplomacy and networking.
The Vice President’s itinerary reflects Nigeria’s proactive stance in shaping international climate policy and leveraging global platforms to attract investment in clean energy, reforestation, and climate adaptation.
Nigeria’s delegation to COP30 includes senior officials from the Ministry of Environment, the National Council on Climate Change, and other relevant agencies. Their presence will reinforce Nigeria’s voice in multilateral negotiations and ensure alignment with national priorities.
