Former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi, alongside prominent South-East political leaders, today officially defected to the African Democratic Congress (ADC) at a major event in Enugu. This move signals a strategic realignment in Nigeria's opposition landscape ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The declaration took place at the Nike Lake Resort in Enugu, drawing key figures such as Senator Victor Umeh and other regional influencers. Attendees hailed the event as a pivotal step toward unifying opposition forces against the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

Peter Obi, who garnered widespread support in the 2023 elections, expressed his commitment to the ADC's vision. "We join the ADC to build a stronger, more inclusive Nigeria," Obi stated. "This platform offers fresh opportunities to address our nation's challenges and deliver prosperity for all."

ADC National Chairman Ralphs Okey Nwosu welcomed the new members enthusiastically. He highlighted their expertise and influence as vital for the party's growth. "Peter Obi's entry strengthens our resolve to challenge the status quo," Nwosu said. "Together, we will champion good governance and economic reforms."

The defection follows internal disputes within the Labour Party. Sources indicate that Obi and his allies seek a more stable base to mount a formidable 2027 campaign. This shift could reshape alliances in the South-East and beyond, potentially attracting more defectors.

Supporters at the event cheered the announcements, viewing them as a boost for regional representation. Political analysts predict this could invigorate opposition strategies nationwide.

The ADC pledges to focus on transparency, youth empowerment, and sustainable development. Party leaders plan nationwide tours to expand membership and outline their manifesto.
