The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has announced plans to convene a strategic meeting with former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi, and other influential political figures as part of ongoing efforts to rebuild and unify the party ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Emmanuel Ogidi, PDP Chairman in the South-South, revealed this during an appearance on Channels Television on Wednesday, emphasizing the party's commitment to reconnecting with key stakeholders to reinforce its position as Nigeria's main opposition force.

Ogidi highlighted that consultations are already underway with prominent leaders, stating: “We’re doing the rounds. We have already seen a former President, Olusegun Obasanjo, and a former President, IBB. It’s all about seeing those who are important in Nigeria to tell them that we are alive and we’re moving.”

Confirming the inclusion of Obi and Atiku, both of whom have historical ties to the PDP but have since aligned with the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Ogidi affirmed: “I know you’re going to ask me about Obi. Yes, we also have plans to see Peter Obi. Even Atiku Abubakar, as the former vice president of the country, we are going to meet him.” He underscored the PDP's enduring role, adding: “PDP is the real face of democracy in Nigeria.”

This initiative follows a recent meeting between members of the PDP National Working Committee (NWC) and former President Goodluck Jonathan in Abuja, led by the party’s National Chairman, Tanimu Turaki.

After the session, Turaki shared that Jonathan reaffirmed his loyalty to the PDP, stating: “We have his assurance that he remains an active, card carrying member of the PDP and feels obliged to support the party.

The PDP has done enough for him, and he will try his best to do more for the party.” Turaki described Jonathan's remarks as “very reassuring and encouraging” as the party gears up for off season elections in Ekiti and Osun states, as well as the 2027 national polls.

The outreach efforts come amid internal challenges within the PDP following its defeat in the 2023 elections to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), with the party focused on addressing divisions and mobilizing for future victories.
