Yakubu Gowon University (formerly University of
Abuja) has taken decisive action to uphold academic integrity and campus
safety, expelling 28 students and revoking the certificates of 15 former
graduates for serious disciplinary violations.
The university's Senate, at its 191st regular meeting, approved the measures after a thorough review of recommendations from the Student Disciplinary Committee (SDC). The expelled students were found guilty of grave offences, including; threats to life and assault, examination malpractice, conspiracy, burglary and theft, cult-related activities, possession and use of hard drugs, falsification of O'Level results which also includes those submitted for admission, and repeated failure to appear before the disciplinary committee despite multiple invitations.
In a parallel decision, the Senate withdrew degrees
previously awarded to 15 ex-students who ignored repeated summons from the
committee, underscoring the institution's zero-tolerance stance on evading
accountability.
The university also cleared nine students of
wrongdoing after investigations, while issuing formal warnings to 33 others
involved in lesser infractions such as conspiracy, hostel racketeering, and
fighting.
Vice-Chancellor and Senate Chairman, Professor
Hakeem Babatunde Fawehinmi, emphasized the university's unwavering resolve:
"We remain fully committed to fostering a safe, disciplined, and conducive
learning environment. Yakubu Gowon University will continue to enforce its
rules rigorously and without fear or favour to protect the integrity of our
academic community."
This crackdown signals the institution's firm
dedication to rooting out misconduct amid broader efforts to maintain high
standards in Nigeria's higher education sector.
