In a significant political development, Senator Dr. Lere Oyewumi, the Deputy Minority Leader of the Nigerian Senate and representative of Osun West Senatorial District, has officially left the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and joined the Accord Party.

Senator Oyewumi, who was elected to the Senate in 2023 on the PDP platform, announced his defection amid a wave of realignments in Osun State politics. This move follows Governor Ademola Adeleke's earlier decision to defect from the PDP to the Accord Party in pursuit of his re-election bid in the upcoming governorship election.

The senator cited the need for unity, continuity in governance, and a stronger platform to support developmental initiatives in Osun State as key reasons for his decision.

His defection aligns with similar steps taken by other PDP-elected federal and state lawmakers from Osun, who have moved to Accord to consolidate support behind Governor Adeleke's administration and agenda.

"I have taken this step after deep reflection and consultation to ensure that the progress we have achieved in Osun State continues uninterrupted," Senator Oyewumi stated.

"The Accord Party offers a viable, focused, and inclusive platform to drive further development for our people. I remain committed to serving the good people of Osun West and contributing effectively to national legislative duties in my capacity as Deputy Minority Leader."

The Accord Party welcomed Senator Oyewumi's membership, describing it as a boost to the party's growing influence in the state and nationally. Party leaders expressed confidence that this addition strengthens their position ahead of future electoral contests.

Senator Oyewumi's move leaves the PDP without representation from Osun State in the Senate, highlighting the ongoing political shifts in the region driven by internal party dynamics and strategic alliances.
