A devastating explosion occurred earlier today at a gas station in Calabar, resulting in multiple injuries and extensive property damage. The incident, which took place in the early morning hours, has sent shockwaves through the local community.
According to preliminary reports from emergency response teams and the Cross River State Fire Service, the blast occurred at a liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) retail station in the [Insert Specific Area, e.g., Marian Road/Atimbo] area. The explosion triggered a massive fire that quickly spread to nearby residential buildings, businesses, and vehicles.
Emergency services, including the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), the State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA), and the Nigerian Police Force, were swiftly deployed to the scene to contain the fire, conduct rescue operations, and secure the area.
Several residents sustained varying degrees of burns and injuries from the blast and the ensuing inferno. The injured have been transported to the University of Calabar Teaching Hospital (UCTH) and other medical facilities in the vicinity for urgent medical care. Authorities have not yet released an official count of the casualties but confirm that the toll includes both station workers and nearby residents.
Eyewitnesses described a loud explosion that shook buildings several kilometers away. “We heard a deafening sound, and the whole ground shook. When we came out, the gas station was engulfed in flames, and people were running for their lives,” said a local shop owner.
The explosion caused the complete destruction of the gas station facility. Adjacent structures, including residential apartments and commercial shops, suffered severe structural damage from the blast wave and subsequent fire. Several parked cars and motorcycles were also burnt beyond recognition. Firefighters battled for hours to bring the blaze under control and prevent it from spreading to a nearby fuel depot.
Commissioner for Police in Cross River State, confirmed that a thorough investigation has been launched to determine the immediate cause of the explosion. Preliminary suspicions point to a possible gas leak or negligence in handling safety protocols during the discharge of products.
The Cross River State Government, through the Ministry of Environment and the Ministry of Energy, has issued a statement expressing deep sorrow over the incident. “We are deeply saddened by this unfortunate event. Our priority now is the safety of the victims and the stabilization of the area. We urge residents to remain calm and stay away from the vicinity to allow rescue workers to operate effectively,” the statement read.
Authorities have cordoned off the area to prevent secondary incidents and are conducting a safety assessment of the surrounding environment. Residents are advised to avoid the area to facilitate the ongoing emergency operations.
The government has promised to provide a comprehensive list of the victims once families have been notified and to ensure that the injured receive the best possible medical care.
