Concern and outrage have continued to trail the deadly attack on schools in Oriire Local Government Area of Oyo State, where armed assailants reportedly killed a teacher and abducted several pupils and school staff members during coordinated attacks on educational institutions.
According to reports, the attackers invaded multiple schools, including Baptist Nursery and Primary School, Yawota, Community Grammar School, Esiele, and L.A. Primary School, causing panic among residents, parents, and education stakeholders. Witnesses said the gunmen stormed the communities in broad daylight, firing shots and forcefully taking victims away.
Governor Seyi Makinde confirmed that seven teachers were abducted during the incident and disclosed that an Islamic Studies teacher lost his life in the attack. The governor further stated that security agencies had arrested several suspects linked to the incident as investigations and rescue operations intensified.
The tragic development has generated widespread condemnation from political leaders, community groups, and civil society organisations, with growing calls for urgent security reforms and stronger protection for schools across the South-West region.
Parents of abducted children and affected families have appealed to the government and security agencies to secure the immediate and safe return of all victims, expressing fear, grief, and uncertainty over the fate of their loved ones.
Security operatives, including police, military personnel, and local security outfits, have reportedly intensified operations around the affected areas and surrounding forest zones to track down the perpetrators and rescue those held captive.
