The Federal High Court in Abuja has sentenced former Minister of Power, Saleh Mamman, to a total of 75 years imprisonment following his conviction on all 12 counts of fraud and money laundering charges brought by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

Justice James Omotosho delivered the judgment today, sentencing the ex-minister in absentia. The court ordered that the prison terms on the various counts run consecutively (not concurrently), resulting in the cumulative 75-year term. The sentences are to commence from the date of his arrest.

Mamman, who served as Minister of Power between 2019 and 2021, was found guilty of orchestrating the diversion of public funds amounting to approximately ₦33.8 billion earmarked for critical national infrastructure projects, specifically the Mambilla and Zungeru Hydroelectric Power Projects. The charges included conspiracy, money laundering, and related offences involving ministry officials and private companies.

Key elements of the judgment include: Conviction on all 12 counts with overwhelming evidence presented by the EFCC. No option of fine on most counts (one count carried an option of a ₦10 million fine). Orders for the forfeiture of assets and repayment of diverted funds.

A directive to security agencies to arrest Mamman, who is currently at large, with potential international collaboration via Interpol.

In his ruling, Justice Omotosho emphasized the gravity of the offences and their direct impact on Nigeria’s persistent electricity challenges, underscoring the need for accountability in public service.

The EFCC welcomed the judgment as a significant milestone in the fight against corruption, reaffirming its commitment to recovering stolen public funds and prosecuting high-profile cases without fear or favour.
