At least eleven soldiers and two civilians were killed after fighters from the al-Qaeda-linked group Jama’at Nusrat al-Islam wal-Muslimin (JNIM) launched a coordinated assault on Diori Hamani International Airport and an adjacent military airbase in Niger’s capital.

The attack occurred in the early hours of Thursday, June 18, 2026, involving gunfire, explosions, and what JNIM described as a “suicide attack.” Security forces repelled the assault after intense fighting lasting around two hours, killing 22 attackers and arresting approximately 20 suspects.

Niger’s Defence Ministry confirmed the casualties and stated that the situation has been brought under control, with flights resuming shortly after under heightened security. This marks the second major assault on the strategic airport facility in 2026.

JNIM, the Group for the Support of Islam and Muslims, claimed responsibility via its propaganda channels, highlighting the persistent jihadist threat in the Sahel region amid ongoing instability under Niger’s military junta.

The incident has raised fresh concerns about regional security, particularly along borders with Nigeria and other neighboring countries facing similar insurgencies. Nigerian authorities have reportedly been placed on high alert.
