In response to the rising wave of bandit attacks plaguing parts of Kebbi State, the Emir of Argungu, Alhaji Muhammad Samaila Mera, has called on residents to lawfully obtain firearms and bolster community-based self-defense initiatives to safeguard their lives, families, and farmlands.
Speaking at a meeting with district heads, village heads, and ward leaders at his palace, the traditional ruler highlighted the limitations of current security measures and stressed the need for proactive community action.
“Acquire arms and defend yourselves against bandits. Be prepared to defend your families and your communities against any attack,” the Emir stated. He further advised, “If you acquire such weapons legally, make sure the bandits are aware that your community possesses the means to defend itself.”
Alhaji Muhammad Samaila Mera emphasized that the directive is strictly for self-defense purposes and must comply fully with Nigerian law. He warned against any misuse of arms for ethnic attacks or unlawful activities, stressing adherence to Islamic principles that reject vigilantism.
The Emir’s remarks come amid continued vulnerabilities in many communities, where bandits frequently displace farmers, kidnap residents, and disrupt economic activities. He encouraged close collaboration with security agencies while empowering local populations.
This development has reignited national debates on the review of Nigeria’s firearms regulations to better support citizens in insecurity-prone areas.
