Former Chief of Army Staff, Lt. Gen. Tukur Yusuf Buratai (rtd), has alleged that some politicians in Nigeria benefit from the prevailing insecurity, banditry, and school abductions across the country.

In a recent interview, the retired General linked the worsening security situation to political transitions and the actions of certain politicians who allegedly sponsor criminal elements for political gains, only for these groups to evolve into full-scale terrorists and bandits.

“Unfortunately, the plain truth is that some politicians benefit from the activities of these terrorists,” Buratai stated.

He noted that insecurity typically intensifies during periods of political transition when security operations face disruptions, funding challenges, and reduced operational tempo. Buratai referenced recent incidents, including school abductions in parts of the country, as examples of how criminal groups exploit such gaps.

According to the former Army chief, some politicians have historically recruited and armed local thugs and criminals to advance their political interests. Over time, these elements have transformed into sophisticated bandit networks and insurgent groups that now threaten national stability.

Buratai advocated for a comprehensive, multi-dimensional approach to tackling insecurity beyond military action alone. He called for decentralisation of counter-terrorism efforts, increased recruitment and training of security personnel, improved welfare for operatives, and stronger political will to address the root causes of the crisis.

He warned that without addressing the political dimensions of insecurity, the menace would persist and continue to undermine Nigeria’s development.
