Tensions escalated into violence at Polling Unit 4, Ward 2 in Ilawe-Ekiti, Ekiti South-West Local Government Area, during the Ekiti State Governorship Election today, resulting in injuries to at least one supporter of the African Democratic Congress (ADC).
According to eyewitness accounts and reports from the scene, the clash erupted following allegations of vote-buying. The ADC Governorship candidate, Mr. Oluwadare (Dare) Bejide, who cast his vote at the unit, raised concerns about suspected vote inducement involving an unidentified individual distributing money to voters.
Arguments between supporters of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and the ADC quickly turned physical, leading to the injury of an ADC supporter. The victim sustained injuries amid the chaos, though details on the severity remain limited as medical attention was being sought.
Mr. Bejide promptly alerted security operatives at the polling unit to intervene and address the alleged electoral malpractice. Security personnel were present, and efforts were made to restore order.
This incident occurs as voters across Ekiti State participate in the off-cycle governorship election, with incumbent Governor Biodun Oyebanji of the APC seeking re-election against several candidates, including Mr. Bejide of the ADC and others. While many polling units reported peaceful voting, isolated cases of alleged vote-buying have raised concerns among observers and political parties.
The ADC has condemned the alleged vote-buying and the ensuing violence, calling on the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), security agencies, and relevant authorities to investigate the matter thoroughly, ensure the safety of voters and party agents, and uphold the integrity of the electoral process.
"Vote-buying undermines democracy and disenfranchises genuine voters. We urge all stakeholders to allow the people of Ekiti to exercise their franchise freely without intimidation or inducement," a party statement noted.
Authorities are urged to maintain vigilance across all polling units to prevent further disruptions as voting and collation continue.
