Senator Oluremi Tinubu, First Lady of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, has addressed recent public discourse surrounding her advocacy for small-scale entrepreneurship under the Renewed Hope Initiative, reaffirming the administration’s commitment to empowering Nigerian women and youths.

Speaking during an engagement in Jigawa State, the First Lady responded to viral reactions and media commentary triggered by her earlier remarks highlighting the accessibility of low-capital businesses such as selling akara (fried bean cakes), roasted corn, kuli-kuli, and other market ventures. She emphasized that the initiative provides grants not loans to thousands of beneficiaries across the country to foster self-reliance and economic participation.

“I know the beneficiaries appreciate it, and we’re not intimidated by the wrong reports. We will continue to make sure that we care for our people,” Senator Tinubu stated firmly. She clarified that the program extends beyond any single example, supporting tomato sellers, pepper and vegetable traders, and other small-scale market operators as part of broader efforts to alleviate hardship and promote dignity in labour.

The Renewed Hope Initiative, championed by the First Lady, has disbursed grants to empower women nationwide as part of ongoing government interventions. These include substantial support for health initiatives such as tuberculosis, breast cancer, and malnutrition programs, alongside economic empowerment drives. Senator Tinubu stressed that starting small businesses like akara vending does not require enormous capital and serves as a practical pathway for many, particularly in the informal sector that sustains much of Nigeria’s economy.

Defenders of the message, including presidential aides, have echoed this view by sharing personal stories of how modest enterprises supported families and education in the past, underscoring the value of entrepreneurial skills regardless of economic conditions.

Senator Oluremi Tinubu reiterated that the Federal Government remains focused on delivering hope and tangible support. “We are forging ahead and making sure that our people are well cared for,” she added.

The First Lady urged Nigerians to embrace opportunities for self-empowerment while the government continues implementing policies for macroeconomic stability and inclusive growth.
